Barbara Gloudon, the respected Jamaican journalist and playwright, died in Kingston on May 11 at age 87.

Barbara Gloudon

Gloudon passed away two weeks after the death of her husband Ancile, to whom she was married 62 years.

Since 1969 when she wrote Moonshine Anancy, her first pantomime, Gloudon wrote most of the scripts for that annual event which traditionally opens on December 26.

Gloudon started her journalism career with the Daily Gleaner newspaper in 1950. She rose to prominence as editor of The Star, that publication’s afternoon tabloid.

For 30 years, she hosted Hot Line, a current affairs program on Radio Jamaica. Gloudon also wrote a long- running column for the Jamaica Observer newspaper.

Trevor Nairne

She was awarded the Order of Jamaica, Jamaica’s fifth-highest honor, in 1992.

Gloudon died five days after Trevor Nairne, another stalwart of Jamaican theater, passed away at age 73.
