Not known for fielding ‘country and western’ acts, Reggae Sumfest opens its doors this year for Wesrok, who makes his debut at the annual show on July 23.
Billed as Main Festival Night 2, it features a stellar line-up including Beres Hammond, Dexta Daps, Sizzla, Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Cham, and Wayne Wonder. Wesrok, whose sound is influenced by country legends like Kenny Rogers, is looking forward to his biggest gig to date.
“It is a great feeling, but the time has come. I have been putting in the work so greater things are in store,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
The past two years has seen Wesrok (real name Percival Buddan) release folksy songs like Poor Country Boy and Born As A Winner. Recently, he collaborated with dancehall acts Masicka on Try to Hold Me, and Laa Lee on There’s A Party.
Working with those deejays are aimed at expanding his base.
“All my ‘collabs’ are to reach fans in other spaces who would not normally listen to my music. The response is good and it adds a new sound to reggae music that can attract country music fans which is a big fan base,” said Wesrok.
A former member of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, Bog Walk-born Wesrok launched his recording career two years ago with the song Looking Back. It was followed by Poor Country Boy and Born As A Winner as well as the EP, Look at me Now.
Reggae Sumfest takes place July 18-23 at Catherine Hall in Montego Bay.
