The 1970s charm of Leave The Door Open by Silk Sonic made that R&B ballad one of the biggest hits of 2021. For his reggae version, Anthony Cruz also went for an old school feel.
He sought the father-and-son team of Willie and Kashief Lindo, who played bass and engineered the recording session. Fellow singer Lymie Murray handled backing vocals.
Cruz is excited about how things turned out on the song which is distributed by Tad’s International Record.
“Music is a chemistry, with the musicians and how you arrange the song. Sometimes people put together a beat and it’s only two chords but if you notice this song it has different chords which is what makes it stand out,” he said.
Leave The Door Open, Cruz-style, has been getting a lot of love in Jamaica where it was released in late 2021. This does not surprise Cruz who has been recording since the 1990s.
“The moment I heard the rhythm I know the tune was going to run away big time. The beat has a lot to do with the music, not just the singing,” he declared.
Fans around the world felt the same way about the original which was the debut single from Silk Sonic, a duo made up of neo-soul singers Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak.
The song’s throwback sound helped it top the Billboard pop chart and won four awards including Song Of The Year at the 2022 Grammys.
