Clinton Lindsay—
Clinton Lindsay, broadcaster, head of Foundation Radio Network:
“I have a personal attachment to this movie because I was witness to a scene shot right across from where I lived in Spanish Town. I saw the commotion at Anglin’s Photography Studio on Hanover Street, where Jimmy Cliff was taking the pictures with the guns to send to the newspapers. On the break, Jimmy came out and was walking up and down Hanover Street until it was time for the next shoot. I also saw the comedian who said in the ‘autograph, mek mi tek him autograph’.”
There were two other scenes taken in St Catherine:
(1) When Cliff and Dread were riding on the bike passing the Ferry Police Station;
(2) Near Greendale (Spanish Town) where Jimmy took the bicycle to chase down Jose. When The Harder They Come opened at Crystal Theatre (in Spanish Town), I went to see it for seven nights in a row. In New York, it played for two-three years in a theatre in The Village; it was a big underground hit.
As president of the Caribbean Club at New York Tech, The Harder They Come was the first movie I rented to show to my fellow students. And to this day, the tracks Sitting In Limbo, You Can Get it if You Really Want, Many Rivers To Cross, and The Harder They Come parts one and two, get regular rotation on my radio programmes. So yes, I am hooked on this movie!”
