Expect a blend of sounds for Homesick, rapper/deejay Verse Mega’s EP which is earmarked for release this summer.
It has six songs including 4/19, a salute to ganja which came out in April. Homecoming is produced by ace drummer Kirk Bennett.
“I definitely blend hip hop, reggae and dancehall on the project with heavy leaning toward reggae and dancehall. Kirk is an incredible producer and one of the most gifted musicians. He is also one of the most easy-going, humble people I’ve ever met considering his talent/achievements,” said Verse Mega, who was born in Trelawny parish, western Jamaica, but grew up in Philadelphia.
He decided to name the mini set Homesick after Covid-19 prevented him from visiting Jamaica in 2021. Prior to that, he made an annual trek to his homeland where he left at age three.
Homesick is Verse Mega’s second EP. His first, You Are?, was released in 2019 while Audio Visuals, his only album, was released in 2007.
Bennett is the go-to drummer in reggae. He was a member of Beres Hammond ‘s Harmony House band for over 15 years and played on some of the singer’s biggest hits including Rockaway and Come Down Father.
He has also established himself as a producer with the Kirkledove label. It has produced hit songs such as Too Bad Mind by Elephant Man and Bedroom Bully by Busy Signal.
Verse Mega believes Homesick reflects his development as an artist.
“Over the past five years, I have grown artistically by being able to express different aspects of my art and personality at the same time. I’ve always been very lyrical and addressed heavy concepts and subject matter in my music,” he said. “I’m at a point now where I’m able to be simple and complex, serious and playful all at the same time.”
