New Life, Marva G’s latest song, more than lives up to its title. First recorded 27 years ago, it literally sat on the shelves until June 10 when it was finally released.

Re-recorded to new music by Osujah Records, New Light’s message is relevant as when it was first recorded, says Marva G.

“It’s a message to be sent all over di world. This song had to come out,” she said.

New Life was among an album’s worth of songs Marva G recorded for producer Kenneth Gordon and his Studio 12 label. None of the tracks were ever released and she became frustrated and left the music business.

Recently, she met Donna Burnett, head of Osujah Records, who was taken by the repatriation theme of New Life and expressed an interest in re-recording it. Marva G agreed and the song was re-done to a ‘reggaerised’ version of Everybody’s Talkin’, theme from Midnight Cowboy, the 1969 hit movie.

Marva G was born Marva Gillespie in Kingston. She grew up in Waterhouse and was exposed during the 1970s to the roots-reggae and Rasta movements that made a lasting impact on many Jamaican youth.

While she recorded intermittently, her sessions with Gordon, a member of the Twelve Tribes of Israel, were her first serious crack at a music career. When the songs were not released, she took a break from the business.

Since returning, Marva G has featured on songs like Sensimenia (with Soul Indi, Micah Shemaiah, Selah and Kabaka Pyramid) and performed at major shows like Rebel Salute.
