Because New York City was “the first stop” when he moved to the United States over 35 years ago, the Big Apple has a special place in Junior Holt’s heart. Whenever he gets a chance to perform there, the singer looks forward to it.
On June 24, Holt performs at The Outside Lounge in Queens at that venue’s Fish Fry.
“New York City is a good foundation when it comes to Jamaicans and even other cultures. New York is di apple; once yuh get a good reception there I feel yuh can perform anywhere else,” said Holt.
He plans to perform several of the songs made famous by his father — reggae legend John Holt, who died in 2014.
Junior Holt and his son Bamm Holt have been steadfast in ensuring interest in Holt senior’s legacy never wants. His catalog is one of the most impressive in reggae; it includes numerous hit songs such as Stealing Stealing, Stick By Me, A Love I Can Feel, Stranger In Love, Police In Helicopter and Tribal War.
The duo have covered several of those songs with a contemporary feel in order to reach a new audience. Last October, they staged a tribute show to their father and grandfather at The Garden in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida.
“John Holt still don’t get di respect what him fi get, especially in the US because is only certain people in the US know John Holt,” said Junior Holt.
He pointed to major cities in the United States with large Jamaican populations including New York, Fort Lauderdale and Miami and Atlanta as being most receptive to the singer’s music.
Junior Holt, who is based in Connecticut, followed his father’s path into the music business. He has been recording songs since the 1980s.
