While she is into original music, singer Alijay enjoys putting a reggae flavor to pop songs such as Hrs And Hrs, originally done by American R&B vocalist Muni Long.
Her version, produced by Chris Knight, was released on June 17.
“It was Chris knight’s idea to do the cover. He heard my sound and thought it would be a good idea to do a cover for the song,” Alijay disclosed. “I didn’t do anything really different vocally than change the R&B style that the song was sang in originally to a more modern, reggae type of vibe. I slowed down the tempo a little bit and peaked my vocals.”
The original was released in February and peaked at number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100. It is Long’s biggest hit to date.
Alijay, who has been recording for five years — is from Spanish Town, Jamaica’s first capital. She is coming off a busy 2021, having done a number of songs including Time Up, a collaboration with Chuck Starr.
Toxic and Obvious are other singles she released last year. Each song, the 22 year-old artist notes, has a consistent delivery.
“I have a very sensual sound, I can put you in a spiritual state to control or reach the body, soul and mind. I try my best to say things or sing in a way where I can touch your soul,” said Alijay.
