Houston’s small Jamaican community as well as reggae fans in Texas’ largest city, are expected to turn out for the Houston Reggae Jam Jam show, scheduled for August 6 at India House.
That day, Jamaica celebrates its 60th anniversary of independence from Great Britain
Promoted by Jamaican Terron Henry, proprietor/chef of Cool Runnings Jamaican Grill, it has several leading dancehall and roots-reggae acts such as Demarco, Tanto Metro and Devonte, Yaksta and Everton Blender as well as soca star Shurwayne Winchester from Tobago.
Houston will be represented by artists such as Sacryfyce and Dinali and several local bands.
This is the second staging of the event. Last year, it debuted at the same venue as Jamaica Independence Jam Jam with Freddie McGregor, Etana and Anthony B as headliners.
Houston is renowned for its blues scene, thanks to bands like ZZ Top. It also has a thriving country music market.
It is estimated that just over 7,500 Jamaicans live in the city.
