Shortly before migrating to the US in the early 1990s, Derrick Scott heard an inspirational song that would complete his conversion to Christianity.
After settling in South Florida, he launched his career as a gospel artiste by incorporating the track into a song that remains special to him.
“I was living in the Cayman Islands when I first heard a song titled You Brought Me Over. Right away I connected with it. When I moved to America and started recording, I adapted the chorus and I wrote two verses based on my personal experience and it gave birth to [the track] Bless Me Still. Everywhere I go and perform it, people respond warmly,” said Scott.
First released on Scott’s 2018 album, Gospel Truth, the Willie Lindo-produced Bless Me Still was recently re-issued as the singer reaches out to persons who gave their lives to God after being in the world. You Brought Me Over was originally done by American group Doc McKenzie and the Gospel Hi-Lites.
Scott is from Linstead, St Catherine, and is the younger brother of singer Freddie McKay, who won the 1976 Festival Song Contest with Dance Dis Ya Festival. Scott followed his sibling’s path into the music business but after experiencing a shooting during a dance at the Spanish Town Prison Oval in the 1980s, his life took a spiritual turn. He said that there are no regrets.
“Even though there have been temptations, I have held steadfast in my mind. I got saved for a purpose and that purpose is what I have been fulfilling by spreading the gospel truth message through my music to the world,” Scott said.
