Many consider the singer/songwriter a spent force in contemporary reggae, especially with deejays and singjays flooding the market. Mezmo Roc One has gone through his share of frustration in a 15-year solo career, but the wheels have gradually turned his way.

Last year, he released Keep On Moving and Hooked On You, songs that have high-profile connections. Keep On Moving is produced by Shaggy while Hooked On You is produced by Mr. Doo, an associate of the Grammy-winning deejay.

Mezmo Roc One, who is originally from rural St. Ann parish in Jamaica, is pleased with his recent progress.

“There has been a lot going on in the last year or so but the biggest is definitely the Grammy consideration we got with the Doo Run project. To be an artist that is not yet fully established and my name is already connected to the Grammy Academy, that is big for me,” he said.

The Doo Run Riddim compilation, released last year, was one of the sets that made the provisional list for 2022 Best Reggae Album at the Grammy Awards.

Keep On Moving is featured on The Doo Run Riddim album, as are songs by Shaggy and Rayvon, Brian and Tony Gold with Bounty KIller and Amber Lee.

Shaggy decided to work with Mezmo Roc One after hearing his acoustic ballad, You Know You, which went largely un-noticed in Jamaica. With growing interest in his music has come renewed confidence that there is a place for non-dancehall music in the land of reggae.

“There is a place in Jamaica for good, clean wholesome music. There is always a place for my music. Jamaica for me is the hub of our music and culture. So, I know that my music has a place out in the world with people who love Jamaica and what we create,” said Mezmo Roc One.
