With Jamaica celebrating its 60th anniversary of independence in 2022, there is an air of nostalgia throughout the country. Many people have re-discovered ska, the sound that put Jamaican music on the international map.
Singers Hopeton Lindo and Peter G get in the ska groove with “Grown Woman”, a song scheduled for release on October 7. Co-produced by Lindo, Richard Grant and Dwayne Hoilett, it is being released by Irie Pen Records and Drahcir Entertainment.
Lindo, a member of producer Gussie Clarke’s powerhouse Music Works team during the 1990s, said he and his colleagues found common ground for “Grown Woman”.
“It was a collaborative idea, with co-producers Richard Grant, Dwayne Hoilett, singer Peter G and myself. The direction we took was to do a ska vibes, a song that makes people want to dance while paying tribute to ska music, one of reggae’s foundation genres. In writing the lyrics I chose to salute grown women, some inspiring ladies among us,” he explained.
Production on “Grown Woman” actually started just over two years ago. But then Covid-19 hovered and it was put on the backburner.
Recently completed, Lindo has great expectations for the track.
“It’s definitely a song to reach a diverse demographic,” he said.
Grant, a longtime ska fan, played the music for “Grown Woman” with Dwayne Hoilett. He is also excited about the song’s prospects.
“I grew up on ska, that’s the type of music that my father played in the house. So, now as a producer I love to create and mix the classics with my love of the different sounds of today. Music excites me! But this particular track came from my roots, it brought me back home to where it all started,” he said.
“Grown Woman” maintains a longstanding professional relationship between Lindo and Peter G who have known each other for many years. The latter has recorded songs for some of Jamaica’s top producers including Sly & Robbie and Mikey Bennett
He has also toured as a member of Sly and Robbie’s Taxi Gang and was the lead vocalist for Sly Dunbar and the new Revolutionaries who performed at Rototom Splash in Spain recently.
