Two years ago when Jason Bromfield launched Open Doors Records, he wanted to emulate his mentors as a producer who makes enduring music. After releasing two ‘riddim’ compilations and a number of singles, his label has released its first artist album.
Nuh Diss Nuh Man by singer Jah Niceness is the title of that debut, which came out October 5 on Zojak World Wide. It has 10 songs, all produced by Bromfield, who wanted the project to be as diverse as possible.
“I see 10 different moods coming out with one artist with 10 different vocals. It’s really amazing,” said Bromfield, who is based in Orlando.
One of the songs on Nuh Diss Nuh Man is Yesterday, which was released in June, 2021 as part of the Open Doors Riddim album, the first release by Bromfield’s company.
According to Bromfield — who was raised in Spanish Town and Waterhouse in Jamaica — Jah Niceness reminds him of one of reggae’s legends.
“I am a lover of Dennis Brown’s music and Jah Niceness gives me that feel, so I said, ‘let’s see what both of us can create from this energy’,” he disclosed.
While living in Jamaica, Bromfield cut his teeth as a studio engineer with top producers such as Jack Scorpio, Junior Reid, Donovan Germain and Richard Bell. The latter was principal of Star Trail Records, which produced hit songs like Lift up Your Head and Create A Sound by Everton Blender, Fire pon Rome and Raid The Barn by Anthony B and Hello Mama Africa by Garnet Silk.
During recording sessions for Nuh Diss Nuh Man, Bromfield said he recalled the teachings of Germain and Bell.
“Everything I learn from two great producers I have worked with, it’s all in this album. All the tricks from Bello and Germain; how to listen for that sound, putting the right words in the correct sentence. Everything I have learned from them is in this project,” he said.
