• Copyright Act ‘preempts’ some claims
  • Musician given opportunity to amend
Etana—

Jamaican reggae singer Etana mostly failed to advance a lawsuit alleging that VP Music Group Inc. and related record labels failed to properly pay her royalties.

US District Judge Gregory H. Woods dismissed nine of 10 different claims asserted by the Grammy-nominated singer, which included copyright infringement and unjust enrichment.

The judge, writing for the US District Court for the Southern District of New York, allowed the fraud claim to advance against VP Music, and gave Etana an opportunity to amend her other claims within two weeks.

Etana, whose real name is Shauna McKenzie-Morris, received two Grammy award nominations..
