Whenever old school Rhythm And Blues singers perform in Jamaica, they are shocked at the knowledge fans have of music from the 1960s and 1970s. Many of those songs Anthony Cruz heard in his youth.
The veteran singer adds a reggae flavor to 20 classics on Under The Covers, his album which will be released on May 3 by Tad’s International Record.
After a lenghty production process, Cruz is pleased the project is finally ready for the market.
“When you work hard and you see how it pays off, you feel good. This is something I have been working on for years and we finally found tge right avenue and right promotion behind it,” he said.
Some of the songs on Under The Covers are renditions of The Miracles’ I Second That Emotion, Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway’s Closer I Get to You, Alexander O’Neal’s If You Were Here Tonight and R Kelly’s Step in The Name of Love.
Cruz collaborated with several top producers on the album, including Bobby Digital, King Jammy, Donovan Germain and Chris Knight.
The cast of musicians is just as impressive. They include Donald “Danny Bassie” Dennis, drummer Kirk Bennett and keyboardist Paul “Wrong Move” Crosdale.
Related to roots singer Garnet Silk, Cruz is from Manchester parish in central Jamaica. His hit songs include Half Way Tree and a cover of Usher’s U Got it Bad.
