Although he never lived in what many pundits describe as the golden eras of reggae, Alanzo Miller has always admired the music’s greats and legends. Each time he stages a show, respect for the ‘elders’ is guaranteed.

He retains that policy for ‘The Art of Reggae Music Festival Mother’s Day Concert’ which takes place Mother’s Day (May 14) at Arts Park, Young Circle in Hollywood, South Florida.

The event features Leroy Sibbles, Glen Washington, LUST, Wayne Wonder and Romain Virgo.

“For me, the preservation of reggae is important. A lot of our legends are passing away and it’s an opportunity to give people a chance to see these artists who are still around, and appreciate their talent,” said Miller.

This is the second staging of ‘The Art of Reggae Music Festival’. Last year had Marcia Griffiths, Freddie McGregor, Singing Melody (who is a member of LUST) and Wayne Wonder as performers.

Sibbles, who made his name as lead singer of The Heptones during the 1960s and 1970s, still records and tours. One of reggae’s great bass guitarists, he played on numerous classic songs such as Satta Massa Gana by the Abyssinians and Skylarking by Horace Andy.

Known as Stretch, Miller is from St Ann in northeast Jamaica, where his father promoted shows. He has been a promoter for nine years and also operates Extacic sound system with his brother, known as DJ Brad.

Showing respect for their legacy is not the only reason Miller and his team select veteran acts for their festival. He believes their feel-good songs go down well with a mature audience.

“It’s a family event and everyone comes out to celebrate mothers. We can all agree that women love good, clean music and entertainment,” Miller said.
