Roots singer Scepta reckons he has recorded as many as 20 songs in the last 18 months. Although satisfied with all of them, he has a special feeling for This World, which he did with Mykal Rose.
He produced This World which was released in May by his company, World Scann Family.
The link with Rose came through a mutual friend and is the realisation of a career ambition for New York-based Scepta.
“It means the world to I at this time. As the first Grammy-winner [first Best Reggae Album Grammy Award with Black Uhuru] and one of Jamaica’s signature sounds in reggae [Mykal Rose], it gives I that great feeling that my work is not in vain. I am grateful and honored in the mist of my culture,” he told told the Jamaica Observer.
This World is actually Scepta’s fifth release as an artiste since mid-2022. He has also produced three songs by other acts as he tries to establish World Scann Family.
He considers the collaboration with Mykal Rose as a shot in arm for his company.
“Each song we release we try to amp up the promotion, and with the name Mykal Rose on the project, thankfully, we’re gaining more attention. So, for now, it’s not so much that the strategy is different, but we’re finding ways to promote more to reach a larger market,” Scepta explained.
A committed pan-Africanist, the Manchester-born Scepta was previously known as Ziggy Rankin.
He began recording in the 1990s, after playing for many years in New York City’s West Indian League with the Real Carib team.
During the 1980s, he operated Culture Roots International, a sound system based in Queens, New York.
