During production for This Is It, his five-song EP, singjay/producer Masta Recka says he knew the project was special. The recording sessions were seamless — almost mystical.
“Imagine five songs that the artists wrote and sang their souls out. The engineers and composers captured some of their best work as if the stars aligned,” said the Florida-based Masta Recka.
This is It was released in May by Zyfex Artists, a company he started in 2002 while attending Westbury College at State University of New York. It contains songs by Anthony B, Twiggi, Perfect Giddimani, Cuz Diego, and Sativa D Black1.
Masta Recka teams with Anthony B on the song Progress. Twiggi does Do That, Sativa D Black 1’s song is Jah is Great, Cuz Diego contributes Patience and Perfect Giddimani does Trouble Deh Deh.
“The diversity of the EP occurred naturally. Keeping the project a secret from each artist resulted in them interpreting the rhythm differently,” said Masta Recka, who is originally from St. Ann parish in Jamaica.
Before migrating to the United States, he spent some of his formative years in Waterhouse, the famous Kingston community that produced acts like The Wailing Souls, Black Uhuru and Junior Reid.
Last year, Masta Recka released #OGG, Zyfex Artists’ first EP. His debut album, #1, also came out in 2022.
The label has also produced and released songs by Stylsh and True Blaxxx.
