Marcus Garvey—

On August 17 many people around the world, at home and abroad, marked and celebrated the 136th birthday of Jamaican born, political leader, activist, philosopher, publisher and founder of the UNIA (Universal Negro Improvement Association), Marcus Mosiah Garvey. Born in St. Ann’s Bay in 1887, Garvey’s legacy continues to empower, uplift and inspire Jamaicans and the African diaspora.

On the heels of such an auspicious day, comes the release of No Destroyer, a new album by legendary reggae artist, and foundation elder statesman, Winston Rodney, better known as Burning Spear.  Released on his own Burning Music label, this is the first studio album from Spear in 15 years. Like Mr. Garvey, Spear was born in the parish of St. Ann’s, Jamaica, and through his music and his works, his legacy has been one of self-reliance and self-determination. Among reggae musicians, none sing the Garvey gospel as often or consistently as Spear.

The 12-track No Destroyer was recorded, mixed and mastered in New York City in 2012. Burning Spear let it marinate until the appointed time, which is now!

His last studio album, Jah Is Real, was released almost 15 years ago to date, on August 19, 2008. It won the Grammy Award in for “Best Reggae Album” in 2009, his second time winning the prestigious industry award.

No Destroyer is available on Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon and all streaming platforms where you get your music.  The album cover photo and design is by Julian Schmidt.
