Reggae icon Beres Hammond has been named as one of 14 persons to receive an honorary degree from the University of the West Indies (UWI), during the school’s graduation ceremony in November.

At the UWI’s Mona Campus, Hammond will be honored alongside now deceased famed businessman Lascelles Chin, Audrey Marks, and Professor E. Dale Abel.

“The annual tradition of conferring honorary degrees, which coincides this year with the regional university’s 75th jubilee celebrations will commemorate the outstanding contributions made by these individuals to their communities and the wider society,” the school said in a statement.

Hammond is being honoured for thrilling generations with his “smoky-sweet voice” for over five decades.

“His spontaneous method of composing, and unwillingness to compromise on the quality of his sound, made a home studio the natural choice for many and continues to attract a steady stream of Jamaica’s most talented musicians,” UWI said.

Other honorees have also been named at the school’s Cave Hill, St Augustine, and Global (formerly Open Campus) campuses.
