KINGSTON, Jamaica —
Days after coming under tremendous backlash from the public regarding a cover fee for his job fair, businessman/artiste manager Romeich Major said the announcement was all part of his ‘genius’ marketing plan and shares that he never intended to collect any monies for the fair.
In a video now circulating on social media, Major discloses that the $1, 000 cover charge was only attached to the job fair to create a buzz and disclosed that all who turned up to the event on Friday did not pay any registration fee for the fair.
“I’m a marketing genius…we’ve seen the work that I’ve done,” Major said. “You see wid Jamaicans, if you’re doing something free, you’re gonna have two things. You’re gonna be bombarded by people weh nuh make no sense and den di people dem weh make sense ago say ‘why him a do supmn free? I’m not interested.”
Major who made sure to highlight how much he’s contributed to Jamaica, said the only thing that bothered him about the blowback from the situation was the ‘scammer’ label.
“For someone who has done so much for the culture and for the people, what could I be scamming people $1,000? I am a popular manager, businessman, marketer…mi nuh need fi a do dat to people,” he said. “Mi did really feel a way when people did a say dat but there was never, ever a charge dat I was going to charge. This execution is costing me roughly about $300,000 and I am here to see maybe5/400 people to interview.”
“Jamaica unu need fi wise up. Dis is not a money thing. Mi make my money off of entertainment and working with Corporate and keeping my events,” he continued.
Earlier this week, Major came under heavy criticism from the public after he advertised his job fair with an entry fee of $1,000. Many felt the artiste manager/popular businessman was using his power to exploit people whom they expressed are desperate for employment.
The advertisement listed a string of available positions, including editor, videographers, set designers, photographers, graphic artist, producers, marketing executives, and execution planners.
Major, having gotten wind of the criticisms, shared a message to his more than one million followers on Instagram. In the post he defended the advertised entry fee and urged people to invest in themselves.
“I am doing something that has never been done in Jamaica, sorting jobs for peeps and you all talking … because there is an entry fee of 1K to get interview for a job that will pay you thousands of dollars. This is why our culture don’t get better. You all find it hard to invest and make yourself better smh!! Jamaica people wake up. Also if you don’t agree with how I do my thing, don’t join my team. Simple as that!” he stated in the post.
“Simple and straight, I aint begging no one to join my team. Even make it worse if you coming around me with negativity you can’t join team always learn this! People fraid of new rules and regulations they don’t like different that’s why they follow. Well sorry, I am a leader so I gonna be different!! For all peeps want work once you for for the job see you Friday,” he added.
