After asking fans to get up and dance on his previous song, British rapper P.nology strikes a more serious tone on I’m Not A Slave To The System, a track that features dub poet Yasus Afari.

The song is produced by DJ Karim, and was released on November 7. DJ Karim also had a hand in the production of I Am (remix), P.nology’s previous single which is a blend of ska, hip hop, and ‘bashment’.

This time around, he goes drum-and-bass with a song that takes on the system.

“It’s not a matter of being against the system, it’s about injustice being part of my survival, my dignity, my humanity. In my opinion and Yasus’, the system of Western civilization built on Trans-Atlantic genocide, colonialism, and slavery extends across Earth. We are about love and bringing people together. We fight hatred with love and evil with good,” said P.nology, who is from Coventry in the British Midlands.

To help get his message across, he found a willing voice in Yasus Afari, a leader of the roots-reggae revival of the 1990s, and a passionate advocate for Jamaican culture.

On I Am, which features American rapper Shifty P, P.nology saluted ska which has been popular in The Midlands since the 1960s when West Indian immigrants moved there in droves.

The son of Barbadian parents, he also grew up on message music. Bob Marley, Damion Marley, Garnet Silk, Tupac Shakur, and Nas are some of his biggest influences.

“I enjoy music, I love to experiment with new music. When I heard DJ Karim’s beats, I knew I was to do a reggae EP…. I love reggae music, drum and bass, R&B, hip hop, Afro Beats, calypso and soca,” said P.nology.
