With Sting celebrating its 40th anniversary next month, founder Isaiah Laing is in a nostalgic mood. He has recalled some of the acts that made an impact on the December 26 show.
He has billed the event ’10 Giants Of Sting’, with Capleton, Anthony B, Spragga Benz, Macka Diamond, Turbulence, and Tommy Lee Sparta six of the acts in that group.
Ever the showman, Laing said the four artists completing the lineup will be announced on November 28th during the official launch of Sting at The Balcony in New Kingston, Jamaica’s main business district.
“They have earned their place as giants because of the things they have done over the years. They are all giants in their own right,” he disclosed.
Macka Diamond featured in one of the most hyped clashes in Sting history. That took place in 2013 when she was trounced by Lady Saw, while Anthony B made his debut at the 1997 event as the breakout artiste with the anti-establishment song, Fire Pon Rome.
Capleton, Turbulence, and Tommy Lee Sparta have appeared on the show several times.
Laing, a colorful ex-police officer, started Sting in 1984 at Cinema 2 in New Kingston. At the time he was assigned to Admiral Town precinct in the West Kingston police division.
Over the years, Sting has earned a reputation for flamboyance by both artistes and fans, whose performances, costumes and controversial antics made it a must-go for dancehall diehards.
The show returned last year at Plantation Cove in St. Ann after a seven-year break.
