Although it has a large West Indian community, South Florida does not host many dancehall shows featuring top acts when compared to locations with similar demographics like New York City. On March 9, that drought will be broken by Fort Lauderdale Vybes Fest, scheduled for The Garden in Lauderdale Lakes.
Promoted by Feel Good Boss and Jamruss Production, the event features deejays Shane O and Vershon, and singjay I Octane. Ras Blinga and Guidance are supporting acts.
Jeane Russell of Jamruss Production said fans, “can expect a night of excitement, electrifying dancehall with a mix of culture.”
Shane O, known for songs like Dark Room and My Last, has not performed in South Florida in six years. Russell believes his appearance alongside Vershon and I Octane is just what the doctor ordered for a region known mainly for reggae, oldies and soca shows.
“Fort Lauderdale’s demographics consist mainly of Caribbean people whose love for reggae continues to grow with the changing numbers in generations. Fans will get a lot from these talented artists, some of whom haven’t graced the South Florida stage for a few years,” she said.
Sound system selectors DJ Ruxie and Cardo, and Fire Reds, are also part of the entertainment package.
South Florida had a strong dancehall show market during the 1990s and early 2000s. Although Miami is home to the popular Best Of The Best gig, the calendar is not as stacked as 20 years ago.
Part proceeds from Fort Lauderdale Vybes Fest will be donated to the Hayes Primary and Junior High School in Clarendon parish, central Jamaica. Russell attended that institution which has been her charity for 30 years.
