A graphic designer by profession, Denzel Martin is used to expressing himself through different forms. It’s no different when it comes to his music.
On February 2, the singer is poised to release Bounce With Me, a song he co-produced with Delroy “Fatta” Pottinger, who also created its rhythm.
“Bounce With Me has a dancehall and hip-hop vibe, which was intentional. I wanted to reach a wide range of listeners. Most of the songs for my upcoming album are lovers’ rock, so I needed to add some variety to the album and Bounce With Me was chosen,” the Chicago-based artist said.
Most of the songs Martin has recorded since launching his career in the 1980s have a lovers rock feel. War, one of his previous efforts, was a message track lamenting frightening crime waves in his native Jamaica and Chicago, where he has lived since 1992.
While Bounce With Me hears him reaching out to a contemporary audience, he insists ballads remain his forte.
“I have not departed from my original sound and style, I am just expressing my other creative side. There will be many more surprises for the upcoming album, for example, pop, R&B, and Afrobeats,” Martin disclosed.
Several of Martin’s early songs, including Memory, were produced by Nelson Miller, a drummer who recorded and toured with Burning Spear for many years.
After migrating to the United States, Martin took a break from music and focused on education, moving into the field of graphic arts.
Six years ago, he returned to music with the release of Love Song, and a cover of Lionel Richie’s Hello.
