Like most creatives, fashion designers are inspired by personal experience or current affairs. For Daniela Stone, the sea is the biggest motivation behind creations for her DTS Swim company.
Her latest line is Ocean Melodies, an eight-piece capsule collection she describes as “a fusion between fashion and music.” It was officially launched on March 1.
The outfits carry names of popular songs such as Drift (song by Teejay) cover-up, Continent (Nigy Boy) kaftan, the Surreal (by Tessanne Chin) pants set, and Radar (Kes) dress.
“I was inspired by sounds from the ocean, so it just made sense to name it Ocean Melodies, it’s just a thing to make it unique,” Stone explained.
DTS Swim has been around for seven years. Stone, whose mother is reggae singer Sophia Brown, heads a five-member staff that produces mainly swimwear from her Kingston office.
While it bears the names of songs popular with the hip crowd, Ocean Melodies is not geared at a particular demographic. Stone notes that DTS Swim buyers usually look for original pieces that suits them.
“We have a decent clientele of awesome women. They range from the United Kingdom, the United States, Caribbean and Jamaica, of course. We do a lot of custom-made pieces; if you have a bigger bust, bigger hips, we customize the design that is presented and do it to your body size,” she said.
Largely self-taught, the 34 year-old Stone attended the University of Technology in Kingston where she earned a degree in marketing.
