Living in inner-city Jamaica is tough for many youth, many of whom are literally or physically scarred by prevalent crime. Singer Written, who was raised in one of those tough communities, addresses their challenges in Sunday Morning, his latest song.
But instead of writing another song inspired by the grittiness of Kingston’s ghettos, Written presents solutions he believes can improve conditions in areas like Payne Land, where he was raised.
“There are several things I would change if given the opportunity to do so, I would get the churches more involved, set up a proper schooling system for (those) who can’t afford to pay, and not just give them the opportunity to learn a trade but to go towards a more realistic career choice,” he said. “I would set up better rehabilitation centers; school property should not be used for non-school events. I can’t tell you how much time I see in the middle of the school week when school is closed because a polling station is needed. And I would help community businesses by teaching them how to properly save and invest.”
Sunday Morning was released simultaneously with Dangerous, another track Written recently recorded for Gravity, his label. They precede Kaleidoscope, Written’s debut album which is produced by Gary “Dr. Dread” Himelfarn of RAS Records fame.
That set is scheduled for release this year.
Written’s recording career began five years ago. Some of his early songs include Remember December and Fear to Understand (a collaboration with Alborosie). At one stage, he was part of a trio that paid tribute to The Wailers. That group also included Bunny Wailer’s son, Asadenaki, and Blvk H3RO.
