A cornerstone of the lovers rock movement that erupted in the United Kingdom during the early 1970s, Peter Hunnigale was ideal for UK Bubblers Riddim, the latest project from London-based record label, ZigeDub.

Hunnigale created that beat which is an update of Queen Majesty, originally recorded at Treasure Isle studio in Jamaica during the 1960s. His song on the 12-song compilation is Heartbreaker.

The veteran singer said it was ZigeDub who approached him to play a major role in the production of UK Bubblers Riddim.

“The idea was based upon the Treasure Isle classic Queen Majesty. As there are many versions of this rhythm track, I decided a modern twist would be a refreshing approach to this timeless classic that would highlight today’s lovers rock genre,” Hunnigale explained.

Troy Anthony, Althea Hewitt, Isha Blender, Peter Spence, Richie Davis and Sabrina Diva are some of the acts on UK Bubblers Riddim which Hunnigale based on the chord structure that helped make lovers rock such a sensation when it first emerged 50 years ago.

“I would say most popular music today is based on a solid drum track and lovers rock is no different. However, chord structure, song and melody define the nature of the recording which in most cases is regarded as being ‘sweet’ when it comes to musical flavor,” he explained. “For example, I love to use 7th in my chord structure as it offers a colorful tone to a root chord. As a bass player, the bass line and sound should grip you, which is often reminiscent of traditional, original Jamaican reggae music.”

Like most giants of British lovers rock, which includes Janet Kay and Maxi Priest, Hunnigale was born in the South London borough of Brixton to Jamaican parents in the early 1960s. Listening to the giants of rock steady and reggae prepared him for a career in music, which started in 1983 with the release of Slipping Away which set the pace for other well-received songs such as Be my Lady, Ragamuffin Girl (Tippa Irie), Perfect Lady and Let’s Stay Together.
