When Derrick Scott first released God Answers Prayers six years ago, he believed it was a special song that would go places. Produced by Willie Lindo, it went number one on the South Florida Reggae Chart three years later when it was re-released.
In August, the South Florida-based Scott received a plaque from veteran broadcaster Clinton Lindsay — the chart’s compiler — to mark God Answers Prayers’ chart-topping achievement.
“When we were recording the song, Willie said to me, ‘Yuh know, there’s jus’ something about this song’. It’s my first number one, so there’s a good feeling about it,” said Scott.
God Answers Prayers is recorded to the music of My Leader Born Ya, a political anthem recorded by Neville “Struggle” Martin in 1976. That song promoted the socialist policies of the People’s National Party which governed Jamaica at the time.
“The idea to use My Leader Born Ya’s ‘riddim’ is based on the message in that song and the particular line about ‘he gave l a message’. So, on my interpretation l try to deliver a gospel message,” Scott said in a 2021 interview.
Derrick Scott is from Linstead, a bustling market town in rural St. Catherine parish, Jamaica. He is the younger brother of singer Freddie McKay, best known for Dance Dis Ya Festival, which won the 1976 Festival Song Competition in that country.
On November 16, he will present the Gospel Mission concert at Unity New Testament Church of God in Lauderdale Lakes. Scott, who has released four albums to date, first staged the event in 2015.
