In 2023 when Tasha T recorded Jamaica It Nice, she wanted to make a statement that no matter its problems, her parents’ homeland remains a paradise that should not be disparaged.
On October 11, her patriotic song was rewarded with an award from the ReggaeXclusive Recognition Awards, which took place at Julius Banquet Hall in Toronto, Canada.
“I am feeling incredibly grateful for the honor of receiving this award. It gives me a boost of confidence and motivation that Jamaica It Nice will continue to resonate with people around the world,” said Tasha T, who was born in Canada to Jamaican parents.
She wrote the song after noticing a number of travel advisories on social media warning people not to visit Jamaica. Most of those posts portrayed Jamaica as a violent country.
“I wanted to encourage the people abroad, that regardless of what you hear about Jamaica it is still nice. The culture, the people, the food, the activities, the music and most of all the vibes and energy of the Jamaican people are unique and valuable. Therefore, despite the struggles, the Jamaican people always find ways to uplift themselves in every way possible and spread joy and happiness,” said Tasha T.
She co-produced the song with Michael Nugent, and was backed by bassist Michael Fletcher, trumpeter Okiel McIntyre, percussionist Roshane Wright.
This year, to reinforce her faith in Jamaica, Tasha T filmed a video for Jamaica It Nice during one of her visits to Kingston.
Guyanese Donna Makeda and Jamaican Prince Everald are co-founders of the ReggaeXclusive Recognition Awards. This was its eighth staging.
