Alan Mensch, a singer who made the Foundation Radio Network Chart’s Top 10 eight years ago with Don’t Run, has died at age 64. His wife Maxine Clarke-Nairne, said he passed away suddenly on January 31st in Palm Beach, Florida.
Don’t Run was Mensch’s first song. It was produced by Jameel Nairne, his son.
Recently, he released Garrison, his second single.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Mensch’s given surname was Nairne. He was the younger brother of Trevor Nairme, a playwright and stalwart of Jamaican theater who died in 2022.
An auto mechanic by trade, Mensch started singing during the 1970s, performing at community events in Kingston. In the late 1980s, he migrated to the United States and put music on hold after getting married and starting a family.
His wife said he adopted Mensch after a Jewish colleague compared him to a mensch, Yiddish for a good person.
Don’t Run marked his official comeback to music. It peaked at number 10 on the Foundation Radio Network Chart, compiled by veteran broadcaster Clinton Lindsay.
Alan “Mensch” Nairme is survived by Maxine, his wife of 35 years, three children and two grandchildren.
