Dancehall kingpin Vybz Kartel will receive the Music of Black Origin (MOBO) Impact Award at the 2025 ceremony, scheduled on Tuesday, February 18, in New Castle at the Utilita Arena in the United Kingdom.
MOBO organizers made the announcement on the awards’ official Instagram page.
The post read “Your 2025 #MOBO Awards MOBO Impact Award honoree is none other than @vybzkartel. His musical influence? Undeniable. His impact? Unmatched. From redefining the sound of dancehall to inspiring a global movement, his influence transcends generations.”
In 2004, Vybz Kartel’s competitive nomination in the Best Reggae Act category, was withdrawn due to controversy surrounding homophobic content of his lyrics.
The Best Reggae Act category which existed between 1996 and 2021, was renamed Best Caribbean Music Act for the 2022 staging.
The nominees in the Best Caribbean Music Act category for the 2025 staging are Spice, Popcaan, YG Marley, Valiant, Skillibeng and Shenseea.
