COULD PRICE REDUCTIONS BE THE REMEDY FOR POOR ALBUM SALES?

Bob Marley–   Following the move by the Marleys, to reduce the price of Bob Marley’s iconic Legend album, which resulted in boosted sales, reggae artists are now evaluating the record-breaking business decision, some wondering if a price reduction, could be a probable solution for the generally poor record sales that has plagued the music industry in recent years. The digital version of the album (Legend), normally sells for US$8, however, as a part of the album’s 30th anniversary celebration, the price was reduced to a mere 99 cents, which saw the album climbing to the number five spot on Billboard, selling more than 41,000 copies in one week, making it Bob Marley and the Wailers’ highest charting album onBillboard. Several Jamaican artists have released albums in recent times, without the level of success they would have liked, as it relates to sales. Even … Read entire article »

ATLANTIC RECORDS DROPS SEAN PAUL FROM ITS ROSTER!

By Kevin Jackson—  Sean Paul—- AFTER a decade-long relationship that produced a string of hit singles and two platinum albums, Atlantic Records has parted ways with deejay Sean Paul. Asked by the Jamaica Observer if Sean Paul was still with the label, Kallman responded: “No longer.” He did not elaborate about what caused the split.  By Terron Dewar–  The country has just been able to export US$1.2 million to US$1.6 million worth of mangoes annually over the past decade. JAMAICA will be able to export mangoes to the US come January. The conditional approval, which was granted by the US Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, opens up a US$500 million market to local farmers. But the country has just been able to export US$1.2 million to US$1.6 million worth of mangoes annually over the past decade, even though global demand (around US$1.9 billion last year) has more than tripled since 2003. What’s more, ministry officials figure that Jamaica has the capacity to export just about 261,000 kilogrammes of mangoes to the US each year, or less than 0.1 per cent of total demand in the North American country. NO GENERAL CONSUMPTION TAX (GCT) ON TEMPORARY IMPORTS TO JAMAICA – GOOD NEWS FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY!

By Daraine Luton— Importers of goods for temporary use are set to benefit from the removal of general consumption tax (GCT) on such items starting Wednesday when the amended GCT Act takes effect. The provision, according to Senator Sophia Fraser-Binns, will be a major boost for the cultural and entertainment sub-sectors, which now pays GCT on such items. “The filmmaker, the person who will be bringing in goods for any kind of entertainment activity, now knows that there is no double taxation taking place. They know that they can bring in that which they need for their event without having to concern themselves about taxes,” Fraser-Binns said. The overhaul of the GCT regime is a requirement under Jamaica’s four-year extended fund facility with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). MOVING CULTURE FOWARD The provision, which Fraser-Binns said would greatly assist the cultural and entertainment sub-sectors, states that no … Read entire article »

THE GENIUS OF RAY CHARLES – THE FATHER OF SOUL!

Last Tuesday (September 23) marked the 84th anniversary of the birthof Ray Charles Robinson, dubbed the blind genius and the father of soulmusic. The year 2014 also marks a decade since the wily genius passed away. These important milestones revive memories of the man, who many claim invented soul music, and provides us with an opportunity to recapitulate his contribution to the development of post-war black music which, to say the least, was limitless. Born sighted and into extreme poverty on September 23, 1930 in the American state of Georgia, Robinson, who later dropped his last name to avoid confusion with a similarly named boxer, hit the road before he was a year old, moving with his family to nearby Greenville, Florida, during the depression years. While there and still sighted, he received … Read entire article »

But I never had the registered title. If I had the registered title, I would be a happy man, because it would have been sold and her … Read entire article »
