JOSEPH “POWDA” BENNETT, A FOUNDING MEMBER OF THE JOLLY BOYS, DIES AT 76!

 By Howard Campbell—  Joseph “Powda” Bennett dies at 76! JOSEPH ‘Powda’ Bennett, a member of the resurgent Jolly Boys mento group, died Wednesday at the University of the West Indies Hospital. He was 76. His wife, Daisy Gardener-Bennett, told Splash that he had experienced asthma-type symptoms since returning from France on August 3. She says last week, he was admitted to the Port Antonio Hospital for four days after complaining of “shorta breath”. Bennett travelled to the UHWI early this week for treatment after his condition failed to improve. Along with rhumba player Derrick ‘Johnny’ Henry and lead singer Albert Minott, Powda Bennett was an original member of the Jolly Boys. SOUND SYSTEM COPPERSHOT DISCO, CELEBRATING 20 YEARS!

Now, 20 years later, Shawn Anderson, Jason Henriques and Matthew Gray are elated at reaching another milestone. “I really never thought about it reaching this far, as we started it as a hobby… we weren’t serious. But it has grown and we have made it through 20 years, which is the biggest accomplishment of all,” said Gray, CEO of Coppershot Disco. SENIORS TO PAY 200% MORE TO RIDE THE JAMAICA URBAN TRANSIT COMPANY (JUTC) BUSES!

By Karyl Walker— THE elderly will be the hardest hit when the new Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) fare structure comes into effect on August 24. Transport, Housing and Works Minister Dr Omar Davies announced yesterday that people 60 years and older will now pay 200 per cent more for bus fares in the Kingston Metropolitan Transport Region. The fare was previously $20 and will now rise to $60. Fares were last increased in 2013. SCIENTIFIC RESEARCHERS SAY BOB MARLEY’S SKIN CANCER NOT “SUN-DRIVEN!”

  Bob Marley died of Acral melanoma— A rare type of skin cancer that killed reggae star Bob Marley causes distinct genetic faults not driven by the action of sunlight, research has shown. Acral melanoma most often affects the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, nail beds and other hairless areas of the skin. Unlike more common forms of skin cancer, it is not triggered by the damaging effects of ultraviolet light. Scientists at the University of Manchester analysed acral melanoma DNA from six patients and compared it with that from other types of skin cancer tumour. They found clear differences in the type of DNA damage caused. In acral melanoma it was much more common to find that large chunks of DNA had broken off and re-attached in the wrong place. BUJU BANTON RECEIVES A BIG BOOST IN HIS FIGHT TO OVERTURN DRUG CONVICTION!

The breakthrough came on Monday following an appeal submitted in May by Buju’s legal team, headed by Harvard Law School professor, Charles Ogletree asking that Buju be granted a new trial and oral arguments on the basis that the singer was entrapped by a paid U.S. informant and that his case was compromised after a juror in his 2011 trial was found to have unlawfully researched aspects of the case while it was taking place.
