UPSTAIRS RECORDS – SOUTH FLORIDA’S MAIN HUB FOR THE VINTAGE SOUND!

By Howard Campbell—-  From left) Danny Breakenridge, his daughter Ayesha and reggae singer Bob Andy— MIAMI Vice and Don Johnson were the biggest game in South Florida (and the United States) when Danny Breakenridge moved there in 1985. However, for someone who had been involved in music since the late 1960s, he saw little action in terms of reggae. “When I came here only three stations were playing reggae, two on Saturdays and one at night. Now, we have a 24-hour Caribbean station (WAVS 1170) and a number of other stations with reggae programming,” Breakenridge told the Jamaica Observer. “There are lots of other small venues that feature live reggae. That scene is vibrant,” he added. Breakenridge is the head of Upstairs Records, an independent record company that has produced songs and albums by … Read entire article »

While the statement holds true in many instances, it does not apply to the great Jamaican songwriter and music icon, Bob Andy. After years of unending showers of praise about his songwriting ability, and his humility in never openly accepting it, Andy seems to have, in later years, finally decided that his work deserves the recognition it has been given. “I must really start accepting the credit these … Read entire article »

REGGAE’S UNSUNG HERO REOPENS HIS SONGBOOK!

The Rastafarian artist is regarded by many critics as Jamaica’s greatest living singer-songwriter yet does not have the fame to match. Clothing the iron fist of socially-conscious protest songs in his velvet tenor, he deserves to be seen as reggae’s Sam Cooke, his greatest influence. His … Read entire article »
