 Exco Levi– CANADA’S reggae market has been growing steadily over the years with Jamaicans and their descendants working to take the music to that market. However, the artists in that market have never been able to cross over into the home market in Jamaica and make a name for themselves on the Rock. One reggae act is working to change all of this and has begun reaping the benefits. For him, roots singer Garnet Silk was the standout of his contemporaries. “For the short time he was here, he created a tremendous impact on the music. His songs are still current today,” said Germain. Silk (given name Garnet Smith) was part of the roots revival that swept Jamaica during the 1990s. That movement also comprised poet Yasus Afari, deejay Tony Rebel, singers Everton Blender, Uton Green and deejay Kulcha Knox. TONY REBEL REMEMBERS HIS FRIEND GARNET SILK!

By Howard Campbell—   Tony Rebel and Garnet Silk— THE Jamaican dancehall was mired in lewd and violent lyrics throughout the 1980s. That carried over into the 1990s until a group of Rastafarian artists from south-central parishes brought their message of consciousness to a music that had lost its way. Heading the group was dub poet Yasus Afari, deejay Tony Rebel and singer Garnet Silk. Singers Everton Blender and Uton Green, and deejay Kulcha Knox were also part of the crew. Rebel, Silk and Blender enjoyed the most mainstream success. Silk and Rebel were from Manchester and knew each other since the early 1980s when they performed on sound systems in that parish. RECORD PRODUCERS DONOVAN GERMAIN, AUGUSTUS “GUSSIE” CLARKE AND AUTHOR ANTHONY WINKLER TO RECEIVE MUSGRAVE AWARDS!

 Anthony Winkler—- AUTHOR Anthony Winkler and music producers Donovan Germain and Gussie Clarke are recipients of the 2014 Musgrave Award. The Institute of Jamaica (IOJ), which presents the annual awards, announced its list of nine awardees yesterday. The ceremony takes place October 22 in the IOJ’s Lecture Hall. Winkler, author of books such as The Lunatic and The Painted Canoe, will receive a gold medal for his contribution to literature. Germain, head of Penthouse Records, earns a silver medal for his contribution to music while Clarke, who began producing music over 40 years ago while attending Kingston College, will receive a bronze medal for similar contribution. EMERGING ROOTS SINGER RIGHTEOUS CHILD (R.C.) TO RELEASE HIS FIRST EP “ROUGH SURVIVOR” AND EMBARK ON EUROPEAN TOUR!
