“CHEERLEADER” CRACKS BILLBOARD TOP TEN, GOES GOLD FOR OMI!

 By Kevin Jackson—  Omi— SINGER Omi has broken into the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart in the United States, making him the seventh Jamaican artist to do so. The Felix Jaehn remix of his 2012 single, Cheerleader, jumps from number 11 to number seven this week. The single is in its eighth week on the main Billboard singles list, and its 12th week at the top of Billboard’s Digital Reggae Singles chart. To date, Cheerleader has sold over 641,098 copies in the US and has been certified gold. Omi (real name Omar Passley) joins an elite list of Jamaicans who have made the Billboard 100. This is one of the areas being looked at this year for IRD, which will be observed on July 1. According to Davis, despite the strides made in the music over the years, “reggae is still not being given a priority in terms of investment and promotion here”. THE SEARCH IS ON FOR TENEMENT YARD REMIXES!

Kalle Sveder, chief operating officer of SKIO Music, said the concept was inspired by the success of Tenement Yard (Newscarrying Dread), the hit song by Inner Circle and roots singer Chronixx. “Mattias Wachtmeister, former director of A&R at Warner Music Sweden, reached out to SKIO Music to get remixes for the Inner Circle release. JACOB MILLER TO BE “GUEST OF HONOR” AT REBEL SALUTE JANUARY 16-17!

Jacob Miller, one of the most influential singers in reggae, will be ‘guest of honor’ at next year’s Rebel Salute which takes place January 16-17 at Richmond Estate in Priory, St. Ann. Chief organiser Tony Rebel says it is a “great privilege” to pay homage to the chunky vocalist who was killed at age 27 in an auto accident in 1980. The Miller segment will feature Inner Circle and Third World, two bands Miller was closely associated. Both appeared on Rebel Salute in 2006 when it was held at Kaiser Sports Club in St Elizabeth.
