“REBEL SALUTE 2015” TO PAY HOMAGE TO JACOB MILLER, JANUARY 16-17!

 Jacob Miller— PROMOTERS of the annual Rebel Salute show will pay homage to influential roots singer Jacob Miller during its 2015 renewal which takes place January 16-17 at Richmond Estate, St Ann. Chief organiser Tony Rebel told the Jamaica Observer that Inner Circle, the band Miller was lead singer of during the mid and late 1970s, will be a key part of the tribute. So too, Third World whose members were also closely associated with him. Miller, one of the stars of the 1970s roots-reggae explosion, died in 1980 in an auto accident at age 27. The Manchester-born vocalist started his career at Studio One in the late 1960s with the hit song, Love is a Message. “IT’S A FAMILY TING” WHEN IT COMES TO MAXI PRIEST, JACOB MILLER AND HEAVY D!

 By Howard Campbell— Maxi Priest—- Growing up in London, singer Maxi Priest looked up to his uncle Sydney Elliott, a vocalist who recorded in the 1960s. He did not know until his teens that one of Uncle Sydney’s sons was Jacob Miller, the charismatic roots singer and front-man for the Inner Circle band. Priest’s father Alfred was Sydney Elliott’s older brother. Jacob Miller used his mother’s surname. “I always loved up to my uncle. When we went to his home it was an experience. I even have one of his songs on my website,” said Priest. The Elliotts are from Ballard’s Valley in St Elizabeth. They migrated to the United Kingdom in the late 1950s; Alfred and his wife Hyacinth settled in Lewisham, south-east London, while Sydney lived in Kent. PHARRELL WILLIAMS’ SUPER HIT “HAPPY” WAS RECORDED AT INNER CIRCLE’S, CIRCLE HOUSE STUDIO IN MIAMI!

Pharrell (left) with Ian Lewis of Inner Circle—- Since its launch 15 years ago, the Circle House recording studio in north Miami has been used by a number of major acts. Last year, American singer/producer Pharrell joined the list of artists to record at the facility, owned by the Inner Circle band. One of the songs he did was a dance number called Happy which turned out to be a monster hit, topping charts in the United States, the United Kingdom and 20 other countries. Roger Lewis, founding member and guitarist of Inner Circle, told OBSERVER ONLINE that Pharrell spent considerable time at Circle House working on G I R L, his second album which was released this year.
