“THE SUGAR MINOTT’S DAY TRIBUTE” EXPANDS TO TWO DAYS!

By Brian Bonitto—  (L) Sugar Minott (R) Pashion Minott—- VETERAN singer Frankie Paul is among several acts slated to perform on the fifth staging of the Sugar Minott’s Day Tribute at Youthman Promotions headquarters on Robert Crescent in Kingston. The two-day event begins with a stage show at 8:30 pm tonight. “Frankie Paul came to the studio a few days ago. He heard of the tribute and asked to be part of it. Dad had a lot of influence on Frankie Paul’s career… they did several songs together,” said Pashon Minott, daughter of Sugar Minott and part of the event’s planning committee. “Many of dad’s foundation friends will be there,” she continued. SINGER YAMI BOLO RETURNED TO THE UK AFTER TEN YEARS!

 Yami Bolo— YAMI Bolo is one of many artists who were mentored by roots visionary Augustus Pablo. Fitting, then, that on his return to the United Kingdom after 10 years, he performed alongside Pablo’s son Addis. Bolo and Addis Pablo’s Suns of Dub group (which includes Trinidadian singers Jah Bami and Ras Jammy) did six shows in the UK, which took place in Newcastle, Nottingham and London. The main event was Kulchasplash on Easter Monday at the Electric Brixton club. Anthony B and Jah9 were also on the card. “Things went down well, everyone was well-received,” said Bolo. Bolo, Hugh Mundell, Junior Reid and Junior Delgado are just some of the acts who recorded for Augustus Pablo, one of reggae’s most creative producers and musicians. JUNIOR REID STARTS 15-DATE USA TOUR!

 Junior Reid—- WITH a new album due in March, Junior Reid heads to the United States this week to start a 15-date tour. The opening show is booked for the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas today. Reid’s latest album, Junior Reid the Living Legend, will be released by the singer’s JR Productions. While he is pitching the new set and songs (Love You Back and Lonely Girl), Reid said that at this stage of his career, he does not need fresh material to tour. “Wi have a whole heap a support pon the West Coast. MAN SENTENCED IN KINGSTON, FOR STEALING HIGH-END LIQUORS FROM JUNIOR REID’S CLUB/BAR!

A man who broke into a club/bar owned by reggae star Junior Reid and stole high end liquors, then sold them at a meagre price was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment yesterday. Yesterday, when the matter was called up in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court, the accused man, 20-year-old Jevon Barnett of an Eastwood Park Road address, pleaded guilty to the offence. Allegations are that on September 6, Barnett prised the door of Reid’s premises located on Eastwood Park Road, then entered and stole several high end liquor, including multiple bottles of Hennessy valued at $24,000, bottles of Ciroc valued at $40,000, a Grey Goose estimated at $9,500 and several bottles of Rose Moet valued at $56,000. Do you remember jammin’ to hits from the likes of Tony Tuff, Barry Brown, Junior Reid, Tenor Saw, Jah Stitch, and Captain Sinbad? No doubt, those listed above were some great entertainers and dancehall pioneers, but before them was the late Lincoln ‘Sugar’ Minott, the ‘Godfather of dancehall music’. The 1980s is documented as the era in which dancehall music was birthed, and Sugar Minott may have paved the way for its emergence. During the mid-1970s, while Minott was with Studio One, he developed his writing skills and produced tracks that could be considered the first set of dancehall songs.
