THE 6th ANNUAL MARCUS GARVEY AWARDS, SUNDAY, AUGUST 17 IN KINGSTON!

  The Universal Negro Improvement Association is a social, friendly, humanitarian, charitable, educational, institutional, constructive and expansive society. It was founded by Marcus Garvey, Jamaica’ first national hero, in 1914 in the city of Kingston. At its height, the UNIA boasted a membership of over 12 million members with over 1000 divisions worldwide. It is the largest global confraternity of Africans ever organized in history. In this 100th year of our inception, the UNIA will be hosting its fifth annual Marcus Garvey Awards ceremony, a charity fundraiser in support of our numerous social projects and programs on Saturday August 17 at 3:00pm on the East Lawns of Devon House. NEW YORKERS CELEBRATE MARCUS GARVEY WITH A CULTURAL SHOW AND PARADE IN QUEENS!

  Marcus Mosiah Garvey – File By Dave Rodney– This year marks the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) by Jamaican national hero and international political activist the Hon Marcus Mosiah Garvey.  The UNIA was created in 1914 to mobilise and empower black people across the globe. To celebrate the centennial, a flurry of Garvey tributes will take place across the United States, including a special cultural presentation tomorrow at the Jamaica Performing Arts Center in Queens, New York. The Queens tribute is the brainchild of Michael Duncan, Jamaica-born businessman, community leader, political activist and noted Garveyite in New York. Duncan leads the UNIA/ACL (African Communities League) Division 432 in Queens, and for years, the organisation has been promoting the philosophies of Marcus Garvey in New York.
