JAMAICAN REGGAE ACTS FAIL TO IMPRESS U.S. BUYERS, NUMBERS FROM SOUNDSCAN REVEAL!

BY KEVIN JACKSON—-  Top: Romain Virgo Bottom: American band Rebelution— THE latest Billboard Reggae Album Chart reveals that only eight albums have sold over 1,000 copies, reflecting another poor year in the American market for Jamaican acts. Figures compiled by sales tracker Soundscan show dismal numbers for most of the albums and EPs on the 50-strong table.   Count Me In by American band Rebelution has so far sold 51,339 copies, the best of the lot. The set has been on the chart for 76 weeks and is currently number five, selling just over 419 copies last week.Amid the Noise & Haste, the Grammy- nominated set from SOJA, another American band, has been in the chart over 67 weeks. PRODUCER/SONGWRITER CHRIS MARSH STEPS INTO THE SPOTLIGHT AS SINGER WITH A NEW SINGLE!

 Chris Marsh— IN 2006, Adrian ‘Izes’ Marshall’s song-writing skills found its way to Billboard via Sean Paul’s hit single Temperature. The track appeared on the album Trinity. Marshall co-wrote the single with the international recording artiste and it found its way to the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts. DANCEHALL SINGER J CAPRI, IN INDUCED COMA AFTER CAR ACCIDENT IN KINGSTON!

BY SIMONE MORGAN—-  J Capri—- KENNETH Phillips, father of singer J Capri, is imploring members of the public to continue donating blood to assist in his daughter’s recovery. J Capri, whose given name is Jordan Phillips, reportedly lost control of her Mercedes-Benz which hit a wall before overturning along Barbican Road in St Andrew, early yesterday morning. “We are really grateful to the donors who came in to give blood, but we are asking others to please contribute as her blood count is extremely low. She really lost a lot of blood,” he said. Phillips told the Jamaica Observer that his daughter did an emergency surgery at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston and is in an induced coma. “The surgery went well but she is still in a serious condition. AFTER FOUR NOMINATIONS, POPCAAN FINALLY WINS THE MOBO AWARD!

 Popcaan— After securing four nominations in as many years, deejay Popcaan finally won the MOBO Award for Best Reggae Act. The event took place on Wednesday night at the Leeds First Direct Arena, in west England. Popcaan, who was not present, won over Chronixx, London-based dancehall artist Stylo G, singjay Protoje and Omi, whose Cheerleader topped the British national chart in 2015. Popcaan is making waves locally with songs including Way Up and Weed is My Best Friend. He has a strong following among dancehall fans in the United Kingdom, thanks to several well-received songs. OMI, POPCAAN, AND CHRONIXX AMONG NOMINEES FOR 2015 MOBO AWARDS IN LONDON, NOVEMBER 4!

By Kevin Jackson—-  Popcaan THE success singer OMI enjoyed in 2015 has been rewarded with a nod for Best Reggae Act at the 20th annual UK MOBO Awards. OMI competes with Popcaan, Chronixx, Protoje and last year’s winner Stylo G in that category. The MOBO Awards (Music of Black Origin) ‘recognises artistes of any ethnicity or nationality performing black music’. This is the first nomination for both OMI and Protoje. It is the second for Chronixx and third for Stylo G while Popcaan earns his fourth nomination. In an interview with the Jamaica Observer, OMI commented on the nomination. “This is truly one of my greatest achievements of 2015. ASSASSIN GETS NEW PASSPORT IN TIME FOR OVERSEAS GIGS!

“KISSES FOR BREAKFAST” BY POPCAAN AND MELISSA STEEL, HITS THE BRITISH POP CHART!

   By Kevin Jackson— Popcaan and Melissa Steel on the set of the video shoot at Hellshire Beach in Portmore— POPCAAN has scored his first British pop hit with Kisses for Breakfast, a song he did with singer Melissa Steel. The song debuted at number 10 on the UK national chart last week. Kisses for Breakfast is the first single for Steel, a 20-year-old from Bradford, England. The song was co-produced by British producer Wundah and Richie Flores. The latter is a Cayman native residing in the UK, who is a founding member of the Black Chiney sound system. Flores is also manager of Jamaican-born, UK-based deejay Stylo G.
