“SIMPLY MYRNA” HEADS TO THE U.S.A!

RIHANNA’S LATEST SINGLE “WORK” SAMPLES A RICHIE STEPHENS’ RIDDIM!

BY KEVIN JACKSON—  Richie Stephens— The Sail Away ‘riddim’, released in 1998 by Richie Stephens’ Pot of Gold label, has been sampled by singer Rihanna on her hit song Work. The single is from the Barbadian star’s latest album, ANTI. Work, which features Canadian rapper Drake, was co-produced by Jamaicans Matthew ‘Boi-1da’ Samuels, Sevn Thomas and Jahron ‘Partynextdoor’ Brathwaite, all based in Canada. Stephens (real name Richard Stephenson) is credited as co-writer. Stephens said he was overjoyed when contacted by Rihanna’s representatives to get clearance for the sample.  “They contacted me last week Tuesday and asked if I was the producer and owner of the master and I told them yes. RICHIE STEPHENS COLLABORATES WITH ITALIAN SKA BAND!

By Cecelia Campbell—   Richie Stephens (front) the Ska Nation Band. Singer Richie Stephens has announced his collaboration with a nine-man ska ensemble. Together, they are known as Richie Stephens & the Ska Nation Band. Stephens told The Gleaner the band comprises bass, guitar, keyboard, trumpet, saxophone and trombone players, two backing vocalists and a DJ. All the members were born and currently live in Salento, southern Italy. “I met the band at a festival in Italy last year after a performance. We both did ska in our set on stage and did very well. That’s how the idea came about,” he said. “They are all trained and seasoned musicians with lots of experience. The 15-song compilation has songs from a number of artists such as T.O.K, Shaggy, No-Maddz, Richie Stephens, Romain Virgo and Maxi Priest. Drummer Sly Dunbar and his longtime musical partner, Robbie Shakespeare, were drafted into the project by Spicy Chocolate.  Exco Levi– CANADA’S reggae market has been growing steadily over the years with Jamaicans and their descendants working to take the music to that market. However, the artists in that market have never been able to cross over into the home market in Jamaica and make a name for themselves on the Rock. The singer came on shortly before 10:00 p.m., and wooed patrons with a slew of hit songs, covering various Reggae artistes and genres. In a performance that lasted approximately 45 minutes, inclusive of an encore, Stephens paid tribute to the late John Holt, Dennis Brown and Garnet Silk, singing a series of their best known hits. He further pleased patrons with some of his own classics including Every time You’re There and By Your Side. Stephens also performed a medley of gospel songs.
