NEW KINGSTON BAND SIGNS TO EASY STAR RECORDS AND TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM “KINGSTON CITY” JANUARY 27!

    New Kingston, a fast-rising, New York City-based reggae band, is preparing to release its third full-length album, KINGSTON CITY, on indie reggae powerhouse label Easy Star Records. The record, which will come out January 27, 2015, includes 12 songs and guest appearances by members of Tribal Seeds, Hawaiian singer-songwriter Kimie Miner,Sister Carol, The Wailing Souls, and the late, great reggae legend Sugar Minott. SUGAR MINOTT – “THE OLE DANCEHALL MASTER!”

Do you remember jammin’ to hits from the likes of Tony Tuff, Barry Brown, Junior Reid, Tenor Saw, Jah Stitch, and Captain Sinbad? No doubt, those listed above were some great entertainers and dancehall pioneers, but before them was the late Lincoln ‘Sugar’ Minott, the ‘Godfather of dancehall music’. The 1980s is documented as the era in which dancehall music was birthed, and Sugar Minott may have paved the way for its emergence. During the mid-1970s, while Minott was with Studio One, he developed his writing skills and produced tracks that could be considered the first set of dancehall songs. FIFTY-TWO YEARS OF FREDDIE McGREGOR!

 By Kevin Jackson—  Freddie McGregor— IN recognition of his 52 years in the music business, singer Freddie McGregor will be honoured by Summerfest Productions at next month’s Reggae Sumfest in Montego Bay. McGregor’s career started in 1962 at Studio One where he was mentored by producer Clement ‘Coxson’ Dodd. A decade later, he earned an underground following with songs like Bobby Babylon and Bandulu for Studio One. SUGAR MINOTT TO BE HONORED BY THE JAMAICA CANNABIS CONFERENCE, AT THE UWI THIS SATURDAY!

  Sugar Minott— INFLUENTIAL singer Sugar Minott’s commitment to legalisation of marijuana (ganja) will be recognised at this weekend’s Jamaica Cannabis Conference. The three-day event which takes place at the University of the West Indies’ (Mona) Undercroft, starts today. Minott died in June 2010 at age 54. Many of his songs including his 1978 breakthrough hit, Oh Mr DC, showed how the ‘street’ ganja trade helped the ghetto family survive. Two other Minott hits, Herbman Hustling and No Vacancy, had a similar theme. He will be honored on Saturday during the conference’s plenary session.
