“REBEL SALUTE IS ONE OF THE WORLD’S LEADING REGGAE EVENTS” SAYS TONY REBEL!

 By Howard Campbell—  Tony Rebel— TONY Rebel, promoter of Rebel Salute, says the show he first held in 1993 is one of the leading reggae events in the world, and on par with major European festivals like Rototom Sunsplash and Reggae Geel. “Rebel Salute is of the highest standard, we give no show any level above us,” said Rebel in an interview with the Jamaica Observer. “Loads of people from those shows come to see what we do, so we set the bar.” Rototom and Geel are calendar reggae events, both held in the summer. The former lasts for a week in Bennicasim, Spain and is recognised as the biggest, most organised of its kind. REBEL SALUTE 2016 GETS “MARIJUANA EXEMPTION CERTIFICATE” FROM THE GOVERNMENT FOR JANUARY 15/16!

By Mel Cooke— Tony Rebel (left) accepts the official marijuana exemption certification for Rebel Salute 2016 from Justice Minister Senator Mark Golding (third left) at Thursday’s official launch of the event held at the Marriott Courtyard Hotel, New Kingston.— REBEL SALUTE 2016, which will be held at Grizzly’s Plantation Cove, Priory in St Ann, on January 15 and 16, has been declared an exempt event under the Dangerous Drugs (Amendment) Act, 2015. It will be the second event held in Jamaica which has been granted the exemption. The first, Rastafari Rootzfest, was held in Negril, Westmoreland, from November 12 – 15 this year. AFTER A LONG HIATUS, SONGWRITER ANTHONY ROCHESTER IS BACK TO HIS GAME!

   Anthony Rochester— DURING the 1990’s roots-reggae explosion, Anthony Rochester was a silent partner in a movement driven by artists such as Tony Rebel and Garnet Silk. Rochester wrote or co-wrote a number of hit songs for Silk (It’s Growing, The Rod, Fill Us Up With Your Mercy), Everton Blender (Coming Harder, Family Man) and Nadine Sutherland (I’m in Love). After a break, he is back in the fold, working with singer Jahmali on Done Deal, the singer’s EP which is scheduled for release next month. In a letter dated June 11, Obama said, ‘I was moved by your generosity’. Throughout the three-paragraph letter, the US leader refers to the veteran entertainer as ‘Patrick’ (Rebel’s given name is Patrick Barrett). The letter bears his signature. Rebel left a copy of the song at Jamaica House in Kingston where Obama — the US’s first black president — held bilateral talks with Jamaican government officials on April 9.
