Hailed as the “Godfather of Go-Go,” Chuck Brown helped usher in a new sound of pulsing, beat-driven music from the D.C. area in the 1970s and ’80s. Now, the go-go genre’s biggest name is dead.

Tom Goldfogle, who managed Brown, 75, confirmed to WUSA, Washington’s CBS affiliate, that the musician has passed away after suffering, in recent weeks, from poor health.

Brown was hospitalized last week while battling pneumonia and had to cancel several concerts because of his ailments.

Brown was perhaps best known in the mainstream for his No. 1 hit Bustin’ Loose in 1979.
