FEMALE singjay J Capri has her sights set on being dancehall’s next crossover artist.

The 23-year-old, whose given name is Jordan Joel Phillips, said she is already putting in the hard work to achieve this.

She recently released the video Reverse It. The track, produced on the Head Concussion label, was released two weeks ago.

“This is a male-dominated industry, so it’s hard for a female to surpass them. Therefore, what I do is study their work ethics and apply it to my daily work routines,” J Capri told the Jamaica Observer.

She believes the time is right for Jamaica’s next international star.

“I have not seen anyone recently who has made that big impact internationally since Sean Paul. However, there are entertainers who have the potiential to do it,” she said.

She told the Jamaica Observer that while attending Edna Manley College of The Visual and Performing Arts in St Andrew, she got her break.

“I met a lot of persons who inspired my creative outlook on fashion, music, art and dance. However, during my last semester, I was blessed with the opportunity of meeting producer Tarik ‘Russian’ Johnston,” she said.

That meeting led to her becoming the first female signed by Johnston’s Head Concussion label in 2011.

She has since released Nicest Feeling, a collab effort with Chan Dizzy; Whine and Kotch with Charly Blacks; and Pull up to Mi Bumpa with Konshens.

According to the singjay, the year’s first quarter is a busy one.

“Other than working in collaboration with the likes of Sean Paul and Sizzla, I will also be touring Dubai for a week after which I will travel to Amsterdam and France,” she said.
