THE WEATHER DAMPENS “EMANCIPENDENCE” CELEBRATIONS IN JAMAICA!

A strengthening tropical wave caused postponement to several activities slated as part of Jamaica Cultural Development Commission’s (JCDC) Emancipation and Independence celebrations yesterday.

According to a release from Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange, minister of culture, gender, entertainment and sport, the adjustments to the schedule were due to the “inclement weather that was expected to affect the island”.

As a result, the Independence Village at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre is closed until further notice. The Miss Jamaica Festival Queen Coronation slated for last night was postponed to a date to be announced.

The Aunty Roachy Festival and the Fashion Greets Music Show scheduled for today as well as the Festival Bandwagon and other planned activities across the island organised by the JCDC, are postponed until further notice.

Where applicable, tickets will remain valid for the new dates to be announced.

The Meteorological Service said a flash flood warning is in effect, especially over low-lying areas of the southern parishes.

Heavy rains and winds associated with the tropical wave have claimed six lives in the Dominican Republic.
