Trevor Elliott—

Sweet Like Sugar: A Tribute To The Late Sugar Minott is the title of an album scheduled for release in early 2017.

It is produced by veteran Trevor Elliott for his Musical Ambassador label. He told the Jamaica Observer that some of the artists he recruited for the project were close to Minott who died in 2010.

They include singers Tony Tuff and Tristan Palma. The former was a member of the African Brothers, an early 1970’s vocal trio that included Minott and Derrick Howard.

Palmer was a childhood friend of Minott’s. He recorded a number of songs for the latter’s Youth Promotion label.

Dean Fraser, D’Empress Marcia J Ball, Horace Martin, Asante Amen and Nina Karle also contribute to ‘ Sweet Like Sugar’.

Elliott, who lives in Florida, launched his production career in the late 1970’s. He had significant success in the early 1980s with Edi Fitzroy, producing that singer’s biggest hit songs such as Check For You Once, The Gun and Princess Black.

It was during that period Sugar Minott excelled as an artiste and producer. Hit songs like Herbman Hustling, Lovers Race, No Vacancy and Tune In made him a dancehall legend.

Junior Reid, Tenor Saw, Nitty Gritty, Yami Bolo and Garnet Silk were some of the artists who recorded for Youth Promotion early in their careers.
