ROOTS SINGER IDEOLOGY, RELEASES HIS LATEST SINGLE “PUMKIN BELLY!”

David “Ideology” Jackson

While writing songs for what will be his first album, singer IDeology wanted to make a profound statement on world affairs, using an old Jamaican proverb.

His latest song, Pumkin Belly, borrows from ‘How water go a pumpkin belly’, an oft-used Jamaican folk phrase made famous by dancehall icon Tenor Saw.

Pumkin Belly is produced by Steven Ventura.

“We have history to learn from but we cannot learn if we don’t remember history correctly. We see a big pumpkin on a vine and would ask, ‘how that pumpkin get so big?’ Well is water get soaked up by the roots to carry all the nutrients for it to grow,” IDeology explained. “It is the same disregard to the obvious we have been doing for ages that has caused great problems in our civilisation. For example, when we have excessively wealthy people with so much they can’t use, it must cause problems with those who are not getting,” he added. “Or if you don’t make your voice heard, it doesn’t make any sense to complain quietly. Certain things seem very obvious.”

Pumkin Belly is scheduled for release in August and will be part of ID2020, IDeology’s debut album which is also being produced by Ventura, the man behind big dancehall hits like Crazy Look by Capleton.

Born David Jackson, IDeology is from Clarendon in central Jamaica, a rural parish that has produced top reggae acts including Derrick Morgan, Toots Hibbert, Freddie McGregor and Barrington Levy.

The uptempo Pumkin Belly is a return to recording for the singer whose previous releases include One Big Family, a self-produced single that was serviced mainly through social media.

Ventura played the instruments on Pumkin Belly which has a horn-driven, live sound. IDeology says he and Ventura went for a stripped-down feel on ID2020.

“The technique used so far on the tracks has been laying down live instrument riffs, sampling them and then construct songs from the captured phrases. I enjoy working this way, it allows me to get that live band feel and sound but still keep the modern grooves,” he explained.

A release date for ID2020 will be announced soon. Reply  Reply All  Forward
