When BET hosts their virtual COVID-19 relief concert tomorrow, Jamaica’s culture will be represented in a huge way via a performance from Grammy-winning artiste Buju Banton. The announcement was made by the US television channel over the weekend.
The entertainer is expected to showcase the best of reggae and dancehall music on the live stream, which will also see performances from the likes of Alicia Keys, Usher, H.E.R and Charlie Wilson.
Dubbed ‘Saving Ourselves: A BET COVID-19 Effort’, the virtual concert is being held to raise funds to help combat the racial disparities of the coronavirus outbreak. In addition to the performers mentioned above, the concert will also see Kirk Franklin, Fantasia, and Kelly Price making appearances. The show will get under way at 8 p.m. and will be hosted by Terrence J, actor Anthony Anderson and Regina Hall, as well as singer Kelly Rowland.
Banton, who has been active on the music scene since his release from prison in December 2018, is gearing up to release his 13th studio album, titled Upside Down. The project will be his first in more than a decade, His last compilation, the Grammy Award-winning Before The Dawn, was released back in 2010.
The deejay recently shared via Instagram that he was in the studio with popular American music producer and artiste Pharrell Williams. Rumours have been swirling around since that Williams may be one of the producers on Banton’s album.
According to Buju Banton, the album comprises 20 tracks. The first track from the highly anticipated project was released yesterday. Dubbed Ganja Man, the song was released to coincide with 4/20, the day marijuana is celebrated worldwide.
